summer bonus came in today
I was wondering when that was going to come in. I suppose I'd better head down to Yamada Denki and check out some air conditioner prices.

Yeah, that may be part of why the rent for teacher's housing is so inexpensive. It depends on what you're used to of course, but it's not bad where I am. Actually, it's cooler here than it is in Saitama (where I lived last year), which is further north. Still, I have done the Japanese summer with NO AC and it is NOT a pleasant experience - miserable is more like it. At that time, I was not very good at managing money and was never able to save up for one. I'm not making that mistake twice. Sometime after work this week or on the weekend I'll go buy one.

I can't imagine how one can survive without AC here anyway x____X
Good luck :D

Fortunately here at the university our classrooms are air conditioned. When I was on the JET Program, elementary/junior high/high school classrooms were not. Imagine a room of 40 kids, who couldn't care less about English, in the sweltering heat.... That was a nightmare.

I guess I'm lucky then. We use air con in all our classrooms :)
But we're a small eikaiwa, so things are different in many way anyway.
I can't even think of working without air con. GAH!!! Horrible x_X *melts*

I think that if an eikaiwa didn't have an air con, they would have no customers - at least during the summer.

since it's been a week since I checked the tefl community I thought I'd reply straight to your journal about your teaching in Korea question

Most jobs in Korea get posted at http://www.eslcafe.com and I know that China and other countries post there too. GOOD jobs mean top schools like Seoul National University (number 1 school in korea) and these schools absolutely require a Masters Degree in English or TESOL or Education. They'll pay 40-50% more than regular jobs and still give you the 5 months paid vacation as well. But, what is best about these schools is the quality of the students. These kids want to learn, most of the time, and they're smarter than most students, and you're really teaching. The other thing is that these schools will require you to teach varied classes and not just conversation. I'd say that if you really want to be a teacher, those are the best kind of classes. I get bored teaching conversation all the time, and I miss the variety that I used to have when I taught conversation, writing and presentation courses.

added

p.s. my husband and I keep a separate blog [info]piratesrok about our experiences in Korea, and i'm also on Facebook

I have no idea about Facebook in Japan or ex-pats there, but there is a huge ex-pat community in Korea and they're all on Facebook and we have a million FB communities as well

any particular reason why you picked Japan? We came to Korea because my husband got his postdoc work here and now he's a visiting professor. I was lucky enough to get a university job right off the bat (due to my MLS) and my old university (about 10 weeks of vacation throughout the year) was better - better students as well as more variety in classes. My current uni is low in terms of the student level, and I only teach 1 class, but 8 sections of it. It's boring, but I get 5 months of paid vacation - which is what I was looking for, so now I'm back in the US for two months this summer.

Thanks, I added both yours and [info]piratesrok to my f-list as well.

Japan? Well, I was a huge Japan nerd all the way through university. I'm looking to broaden my horizons. Korea seems interesting, the pay and vacation time sound about right anyway. :)
